Project Profile

WLE in Africa : Opportunities to enhance smallholder Agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa through Sustainable Water, Land and Ecosystem Management - IWMI FAO share

Duration : July 1, 2014 - April 13, 2017
(Extended to June 30, 2018)

This project aims to enhance productivity, resilience and sustainability of farming systems of the rural poor. It will build on agricultural water management innovations which emerged from the AgWater Solutions project and from IFAD's past investments in agricultural research, adapting research results to the biophysical and socio-economic contexts in project countries. The project seeks to support activities to enhance the adoption of AWM solutions for increased agricultural productivity, more efficient use of productions inputs including water, land and soil nutrients, and build system resilience to economic stresses. Research outputs will support farming systems along the entire value chain from production to consumption. Opportunities for pro-poor technologies and innovations will be assessed, based on a system approach, and then piloted to develop business models that can be used for scaling investment.
