Project Profile

Productive wastewater use in Algeria

Duration : January 1, 2008 - January 10, 2010
(Extended to October 30, 2010)
Overview:

Given the current water scarcity situation in Algeria, the reuse of treated wastewater is now a national priority. This project applies an integrated systems approach to reusing wastewater in two pilot sites that represent the complexity of the problem related to the management and use of wastewater in Algeria. The sites are: the area around Lake Réghaïa which has a humid climate; and the area around Constantine, which has a continental climate. The overall objective of the research project is to contribute to the capacity building of Algerian ministries and to develop knowledge, through projects focused on improved sanitation and integrated wastewater management with the twofold purpose of reducing pollution and reusing treated wastewater for agriculture.
